I have a web server in fedora core 6. It was running good for some years now. And suddenly today when I switched on the server and try to login as root, the screen didn't show the option to type the password, just went back showing the login screen.
You don't fix the problem. You nuke it, and start again with CentOS. Fedora is not an appropriate distribution for use in a server environment.
Fedora releases become unsupported after ~12months, your system is severely out of date.
CentOS is a binary equivalent for Red Hat, and Fedora is the "testing ground" for Red Hat, so for most intents and purposes syntax and configurations etc will be the same.
Sounds suspiciously like someone without decent backup(s).
Could be hardware, could be software - that seems to cover most options. Without more info you'll get no better answer I suspect.
thank for your tips, but no matter what I have to fix this problem asap. It's a must. If I can't get any better advice then I have to try on my own then.
What updates or changes to hardware/software were made just prior to this happening, if any?
Are you trying to log in to a graphical user interface? or to runlevel 3 with a root prompt?
You might try googling Fedora login loop. I've seen other posts with this problem here at LQ and as I recall, many happened after some type of update so you might first try the search tab on the right of this page.
