Fedora Core 4 (test 3) and Dell Optiplex GX280

I am having a lot of problems installing Fedora Core 4 test 3 on my Dell Optiplex GX280 3.0Ghz, 512 RAM. I have read that Debian 3.1 did not support the SATA controller but if you set it to IDE mode in the BIOS. I set mine to "combined mode" and I am still having problems. Before it would find the drive and install but failed during install. Now it just cant find the drive.

Any hopes the Final Fedora Core 4 will support my box? Any work-arounds?

Remember that FC4T3 is not a stable release, but should be very close to one.

I would surprised if FC3, or at least the latest FC3 kernels, didn’t support your SATA controller. FC4 is scheduled for release on June 13.

FC3

I tried to install FC3 but I had a problem with my mouse and keyboard. It saw them as PS2 devices and would not work. Tried again this morning... and FC3 went in fine. Ill have to give FC4 a try next week.

Sometimes you get the idea that the Anaconda installer has a random number generator that determines whether an installation will be successful.

back to square one

FC3 crashed after a couple of days and would not boot again. I'm starting to think its hardware. I have tried FC3, FC4 test 3, debian 3.1, Solaris 10 x86. I have had the best luck with FC3 and that only lasted a couple of days (failed to reload it).

Anyone have any luck getting any desto on a GX280?

HW issue

thanks for the posts... turns out it was a hardware issue. Looks like bad RAM. Got my hads on a second GX280 and FC4 installed just fine.
