fedora core 4 fresh install stops during boot
 

Hello all...after realizing my hardware was just too new for Suse linux 9.2 pro, i have aquired and installed Fedora Core 4. The install goes perfectly, without a hiccup. I installed the default Grub boot loader. However, when the install is finished and I try to boot, it stops working at:

Starting udev:
Initializing hardware... storage network_

It leaves me with a blinking blank prompt at the end (signified with "_"). When i hit reset, it gets to the same point and stops, again leaving me with the blinking cursor thing. I guess the first thing I will try is installing the Lilo boot loader if that is possible...I dont know.
Any suggestions? Has this ever happened to anyone else? How can I make it finish its boot sequence?

I think the solution may be to go into interactive startup and stop the probing of whatever device freezes the boot....but I cant get it to go into interactive startup....its too fast! :( Does anyone know how I can make interactive startup the default? Perhaps from the rescue cd?

the other posts are older pc than the one you are using thats why you didn't install suse !.
I had the same problem as yourself with the boot DISC hanging on install I found that when I downloaded the Discs I forgot to take the time to check them ... my first CD was bad .. I downloaded again and have solved the problem now.
I got the hang up on the sound card and network cards.
So make sure you check your downloaded discs first

Well, I was using Suse, becasue i had access to a copy of 9.2 pro for free. I determined that the distro was just too old for my system, which is brand new...The kernel would not support much of my hardware. So, i downloaded fedora core four. I did the media check, all the CDs are cool. I did resolve the issue though, It turns out, that Fedora core 4 does not recognize my onboard sound card....using info from another post, i determined that disabling the soundcard would allow fedora to boot...and low and behold...It worked!
However, my excitement was short lived when I realized that now I have no sound! I am going to get some old sound cards and install them...see what I come up with. Does anyone know of a modern decent sound card that is supported by Fedora Core 4? Thanks for your interest Trin!

(btw, i use other computers...my older laptop for instance, to post... ;))

Sound card ...... same old same old..

Don't give up on your card just yet they are proberbly working on a fix, fedora 4 is still Newish

Drivers should already be present in Fedora for sound. The drivers are part of the Alsa sound package.
Get to a terminal window, as root user. Type in;

alsamixer (hit the enter key)

Make sure that the volume is turned up all the way for at least the master setting (the first grapic bar)and the cd volume bar.

Hit the escape key to exit alsamixer and see if you can play sound at all.

If something is amiss, or the sound card is really not configured, at the command line, as root user:

system-config-sound

At the pop up window, configure the sound card, which should be the snd-intelx0 driver.

This will give you a graphical window that will allow you to change the volumes.

It doesnt matter what I do in Linux, with my soundcard disabled in the bios (which i had to do to even boot...) I will never get sound... Add to this the fact that my onboard ethernet card is not recognized... I have the intel D945GNTLR Mobo with built in sound and ethernet card. I cant get either to work in fedora linux...any help? The Ethernet card is not on the list of supported ethernet cards...perhaps one day it will be in a future update, but how can i get updates without an ethernet card??
