Fedora Core 4; Random Video Issues?

I just installed Fedora Core 4; for the most part everything seemed to install and worked well. However I've had an issue with Fedora "crashing" at random times, there are two different results of the system crashing.
First one is the video to the monitor goes out of whack, and I get the video out of sync error on my monitor as if I've changed to an unsupported resolution. I have an ATI Radeon 7200 card; I've had this issue occur in both GNOME & KDE and at 1024x768 & 1280x1024..
The other result of the system "crashing" is just a complete freeze of the interface except for the mouse which I can still move but nothing responds.
Both of this appears to be random; there doesn't seem to be any specific program or action which is triggering this. Any help to this situation would be appreciated.

Thanks,

How long did you wait when the system "crashed" with the mouse still working? This sometimes only means that some thread has grabbed the system resources while waiting for some response. (Often a network response.) I've had to wait as much as five minutes (less that once in three months) for the lock to be released.

Warning: Once I got impatient and hit the "reset" button. When I rebooted, I discovered that the "wait" had been for a block write to my ext3 journal file, and that a (now bad) journal file trashes the whole file system. (You can delete the bad journal file, making the file system ext2, but it's a real pain, and you may have bad data in you main file. I ended up reinstalling FC4.)

I waited atleast five minutes one time; it could be a possiblity I'm sure. I guess the mystery issue is the video display randomly kicking out; I've never had an issue with this video card before on various distros of Linux.
