Fedora Core 3: How to get the kernel source code into the relevant directories?
 

Hello!

I just installed Fedora Core 3 by downloading the dvd image. I wanted to take a look at the kernel source, but did not find any in the usual directories where i'm supposed to see it.

In the release notes for the distribution, i found that this one does not install the source code and that i've to get it using up2date command? I tried that, the up2date command seems to work fine without any error messages, but it doesn't seem to put any .src.rpm file anywhere. So i downloaded the CD images with the source. Took a look @ the rpms , and it doesn't have kernel source for i386 arch. :(

How do i get to install the source code in my machine? I'm new to linux, and getting frustrated that i can't get this seemingly simple thing right. Calling all experts for help!!

While I haven't touched the DVD ISO, you could load up the DVD and look for a directory called SRPM, those are all your source RPMS. Don't know why a DVD wouldn't have it.

There are no SRPM's on the DVD and the kernel source is not provided. You may have todonwload it directly from www.kernel.org

Check here for the latest kernel*.src.rpm's (or check other mirror sites in the /updates/3/SRPMS directory).

The vanilla kernel is different from the Fedora Core kernel, coz Redhat extensively patches the vanilla kernel.

It's not so "extensively" anymore. It used to be heavy patching with Red Hat Linux 9 and older. But with Fedora Core, the number of kernel patches has decreased significantly. There are other Linux distributions, which still apply several hundreds of kernel patches.
