Fedora C3 Custom Kernel

Has anyone managed to get a hand rolled kernel to boot in Core 3?

No matter what I do, I get "Warning: Unable to open an initial console" or errors about mknod /dev/console failing.

I'm using the 2.6.9 configuration I had working on FC2. I've tried doing
'MAKEDEV console null zero' as suggested by various websites, but to no avail. I've tried it with and without initrd. I'm stuck.

Is there a kernel configuration I'm missing?

Hi David,

Presumably the module/option you are looking for is in devices -> console or something like this?

I'm just compiling my first FC3 one, let's see what happens...

Hi.

/dev/console exists, both on disk and in initrd.

This problem is something to do with udev, because that's all that's changed between FC2 and FC3 as far as the kernel's concerned - I'm using the same kernel config I have been for ages in FC2, and I'm running with SELinux turned off.

I don't particularly want to have to revert to using devfs, as udev seems to be a better system.

All is well.

My limited knowledge of initrd was my downfall.

I had removed tmpfs from my kernel config, as I wasn't using it normally. This broke initrd (which appears to be necessary for a *pure* udev system).

I had also removed the root=/devhdxx line from my boot arguments, as this is not normally needed when booting directly to the kernel. This also broke initrd.

So. tmpfs compiled in and root=/dev/hda2 on the kernel arguments eventually solved the problem.

Lately I tried compiling my own kernel with minimal modules ,minusing wireles,wan,isdn,etc.
During compilation, all the steps were successfully completed. But when i tried to boot with it,
I also encounter this error :
-unable to open initial console.. I dont know how to proceed anymore..
Have u solved your earlier problem. What did u do to solve it.
Pls enlighten me. thanks...

Hi.

Make sure you've got tmpfs compiled into the kernel make an initrd, then boot from the image, and you should be OK.
