Fedora 8 upgrade hangs after completing packages

i'm trying to upgrade from FC5 to FC8, using a DVD. I've tested the dvd and it comes out ok.

everything goes smoothly with the upgrade, except at the end. after installing all the packages, the installation freezes at "806 of 806 packages completed". this has happened 2x now. the first time i turned off the computer manually and restarted without the DVD, and i was left with FC5 (everything was fine though). so i tried it again.

any ideas on what is happening here? thanks,

pab

When Fedora releases new version I believe they focus their upgrade efforts on the previous version. Your best bet is probably to back up your data (pics, music, photos, movies, etc) and do a fresh new install instead of an upgrade.

thanks. i did just that and when i restarted after doing a full installation, i still got the grub screen afterwards that listed only the OLD KERNEL. then i selected that, i got a "panic" and trying to kill init.

btw, when i did the new installation i selected no boot loader (as i currently only have linux on it) and it did have grub on it before. however, i assumed that it would therefore just write overtop of the MBR with only FC8 on it.

am i wrong?

When you select no boot loader, then it left grub alone. That is fine, but that also means that grub never got updated. What you need to do is boot from the install cd into rescue mode

From there, do "chroot /mnt/sysimage"
then "grub-install /dev/sda" or whatever is your harddrive
it should automatically query available bootable images and install a new grub.conf in the /boot directory. Try rebooting after that and you should be fine.

Let us know if this solves your problem.

thanks a lot for the post. i had already, unfortunately, gone back to the prior state of my system and might keep it there for a bit. When I'm ready to upgrade again, I will certainly update what's happened and advise on how your advice worked out. I do appreciate your time!
