Fedora 7 updates with yum (ugh...)
I need a good way to download the updates my system needs WITHOUT installing them. Yum does not have a download only option. Is there any package I can install to do this? Or is there any way to make yum output a list of updates in a fashion that would allow me to script the download of them from a mirror somewhere? The way yum outputs with a simple yum check-update is really poor for doing this, as it doesn't use the file names of the RPMs.
Honestly, not including a download only option is a really stupid oversight. If I had a choice in the matter I'd be using a Debian-based distro, but unfortunately I'm stuck with Fedora 7 for this project. Any suggestions for acquiring the updated packages in some sort of automated manner without installing them are appreciated. Thanks in advance. |
In older versions Yum had the --download-only option. You could rsync the update dir from a mirror or use an update tool that still has a "--download" option like 'autoupdate'.

Let me explain to you as it was clearly too subtle for you: the OP said it was a "really stupid oversight" to not include a download-only option and _implied_ that this was the fault of Fedora whereas a Debian based distro would never have such a problem. So, having explained that the option does in fact exist, I said "stupid fedora!". Gettit?! Besides, never did I suggest that I could produce a better distro all by myself. Whats with a forum where the moderators are so arsey with people who are trying to help? |
ironic statement was OK
Code:
"yum install yum-downloadonly" I just wonder about the original question-maker. It's so lame to complain about a distribution when talking about an application that is actually developed independent from the given distro and making big statements without the slightest attempt to read man pages or do some basic Googling. Very lame! Regards, SIMP Fedora User |
