Personally I'd want to take copies of the logs for later analysis but if you're in a total emergency you can delete /var/log/messages* and restart the machine.
CHeck your logrotate directives and use compression where possible.
I'd also take a look daily at your messages log file and see what is making it grow, you may have some software that's set to log too much, look for repeated lines in messages and see if you can work out what they are and why they are occurring.
Now that you're back and running consider removing any software you've installed that you don't actually need.
