Fedora 15 boot freezes after "Started SYSV" message
Hello,
I have Fedora 15 64-bit with XFCE running as a virtual machine in VirtualBox 4.1.4, and it was working really well. A couple days ago, the boot process of the OS would freeze at this point: http://i.imgur.com/q0Vzc.png I don't mind having to re-install the system as a last resort, but there is some data on its hard drive that I would like to retrieve before doing so. The thing is that the partition is encrypted with LUKS, and while I can boot with a Fedora 15 live cd and see the drive, it gives me an error saying it is "not mountable" even after I correctly entered the password. Can anyone help with this? I.e. how can I retrieve the information from an encrypted drive in this case? Thanks! |
VirtualBox has many issues, including random corruption. If the encrypted volume was corrupted, it's possible the data is no longer recoverable.

But when starting Fedora I was asked for my LUKS disk encryption password, it was accepted, and the boot process starts until it freezes as shown in my screenshot.
So looks like the drive still mounted correctly? If so, is there still a way to retrieve the information?? |
Can you boot to single user mode and access the drive?
|
Sorry, newbie here, how do I go into single user mode during boot?
|
The step-by-step is in the documentation.
|
Success!
I was able to boot into single user mode and retrieve my files. Thank you so much for the suggestion! Also, does anyone have an idea exactly what was the problem I had? Why did the boot process stop there (see original post's screenshot)? |
