Fedora 14 Gnome or KDE

Hello forum! Fedora 14 released. Which spin do you prefer? With KDE or Gnome?

My recommendation is that it doesn't matter.

You can always install with one, then download the other and switch back and forth.

KDE lost me with v. 4. I lean KDE, but dislike all the extra Akonadi overhead which I don't want or need and which, if I remove it, keeps knocking on the door.

Nevertheless, I prefer some of the KDE apps and tools to their Gnome equivalents (particularly Konqueror for file browsing, Kate, Konsole, Ksnapshot, and Kolourpaint). Plus it's convenient to have both Gnome and KDE libraries available.

So I install whatever's on the CD, download what else I want, replace Gnome/Kscreensaver with xscreensaver, and run Fluxbox for my desktop.

Cool

i prefer Gnome, more stable than KDE, KDE is sluggish , has more crashes and is annoying,
to me KDE feels like vista to windows, even windows 7 runs smooth and faster than any linux KDE version but Gnome is a little bit faster than win 7, with all effects activated, compiz ,rotating cube, etc etc ( in this same laptop)
even slackware linux KDE with so many things turned off by default , i mean akonadi and a lot of services doesnt even match the speed of my Fedora box.
Gnome is more responsive and faster KDE, at least in my laptop :
HP dv2500 ,Intel Centrino Duo, 2GB ram , 250GB ,
there is a reason Fedora ships with Gnome by default.

If I were to choose a spin I'd pick the Xfce one. However, I just grab the big 'ol DVD and install everything I can think of.

Version 4.5.5-1 is very stable now and a lot more customizable than Gnome.

At the time when I had my dual core system, I had the 32 bit Gnome and KDE 64 bit versions. The KDE version wasn't bad, was using it about a year ago. Though, I'm a diehard Gnome user fan!

Actually, I prefer LXDE. But given the choice between GNOME and KDE, I'd have to go with GNOME. On the other hand, my preference is irrelevant - use whatever DE/WM you prefer.

This is my first post here..

About KDE or Gnome, well, I use both. Love Gnome, but I prefer some KDE apps, but, well, this is open source, if there is a feature in a KDE-app that you will like to be in a Gnome-app, you can always write it yourself, this is a good way of contributing and help improve software.

I've always wonder why is Gnome default in Fedora.

Any idea on this?

Not really, but if FAQs pages really presented FAQs, I'm sure this would be one of them.

I have used and prefer Gnome since Fedora Core 10. The hardware I had back then was not the latest but it was no slug. KDE loaded a lot slower than Gnome. And I like things that load fast. To me it means Gnome uses less system resources. That means less strain on the system and longer life. I think most people -- especially young -- like KDE because it is more pleasing, all the eye candy. Gnome feels and looks more practical. I think maybe this is why Fedora ships with Gnome as the default browser. Since Red Hat relies on the Linux community to refine Fedora and then apply these refinements to future Red Hat products it makes sense they would accommodate the more practical minded.
When I first started using Fedora Core I had a relatively slow combination of hardware and I had to use IceWM. It is a bare bones window manager that loads much faster than KDE or Gnome. That was when FC4 was the current version. All that being said, Gnome gets my vote over KDE even though I use several programs developed for KDE.
