We'll I've tried my hardest not to have to post here.. I can't seem to get my codecs working properly. I've searched and searched..
Linux xxxxxx.local 2.6.32.11-99.fc12.x86_64 #1 SMP Mon Apr 5 19:59:38 UTC 2010 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
gnome-mplayer and any media player I install..
The media player opens and will then slightly lock up my system but I do have sound although it's very choppy. Once the video is done playing the system opens backup and can be used.
I have installed the w32 codecs from the all.xxxxxx.tar.bz2 package that is referenced and also the mplayer-codecs for the x86_64.. They are placed in /usr/lib/codecs with links to /usr/lib64/codecs , /usr/lib/win32 /usr/lib64/win32.. I might be missing a path there from memory.. I've also installed packages that were recommended though I did this carefully and only used fedora or rpmfusion repositories.. only time I use rpm fusion is when fedora doesn't have the package.
What am I missing? I tried finding x86_64 codecs but could not other than what I listed.. DO the w32 codecs work in 64bit?
What logs can I look at to get some more information?
?? have already checked that out and tried the options. None of of the media players work properly. ??
well ALL OF them from the mjm instructions DO WORK just fine
just install rpmfusion LIKE mjm states
it is in the instructions.

Fedora ships with a limited set of media player for both audio and video. For audio please read the MP3 player notes. For video and other multimedia (DVD, etc.) we will also be making use of a 3rd party repository: RPMFusion. Make sure to have the RPMFusion repositories configured before executing the following. Note that many "dependancies" in libraries, plugins and codecs are shared between these applications and also the MP3 player applications.
The most popular media players (in order) are: MPlayer, Xine and VLC. Each has its own strengths. Install whichever you prefer although the first 2 are recommended.
MPlayer - MPlayer comes in a command line only interface (mplayer) or skinable GUI and it also has a powerful encoding tool MEncoder (also great for ripping or compressing audio/video). Additionally there is a highly functional web plugin allowing for many popular formats in Firefox/Mozilla (WMV, QuickTime, etc.).
* Installation through yum with RPMFusion enabled:
* Note that mencoder is optional but provides many encoding functions.
* Binary Codecs: Please install the Binary Codecs for further support of formats that MPlayer does not directly support.
* MPlayer should work automatically defaulted to PulseAudio.
They always say "Linux is not Windows", but sometimes you need to say "Linux is not Unix" (unless, perhaps, when it's Slackware).
Your problems started with messing around with tarballs. Use the repositories: that's what they're for.
gstreamer-plugins-good from Fedora
gstreamer-plugins-bad, gstreamer-plugins-ugly from RPMFusion
the codec for commercial DVDs from Livna
RPMFusion also have the appropriate version of MPlayer.

I understand they all work fine just not on my system thats what I'm trying to figure out.. I have installed RPM Fusion and Like I said yes none of the media players work right now.. ,, I will try and remove them start from scratch as much as I can and reinstall all codecs and try each media player one buy one and use rpmfusion.. but I'm pretty sure thats where they came from..
I'll post back soon as I can give this a try..
Just for my frame of mind,, there are no special codecs for x86_64 correct?
gtstreamer plug-ins.. are these then the codecs that I installed with the all codec tarball?

Well, I backtracked and all was well, I was able to play all media types and then I rebooted just to make sure.. System came back up and does the same damn thing.

turn on rpmfusion as a perminat repo
that is WHY IT WAS MADE . to fix the " incompatible problems"
it was designed to be on always .
Do you turn off the fedora repos?
Could updating from the fedora repo's be the issue here?
rpmfusion-free and rpmfusion-nonfree rpm's are designed to be 100% compatible
this is why the rpmfusion project was started
you might want to read the fedora user guide http://docs.fedoraproject.org/
to see what is turned on run this
Code:
yum repolist
-- to see ALL on and off --
yum repolist all
what you DO NOT want on is any with "-testing " in the name and you DO NOT WANT rawhide turned on
rawhide is the current " in testing "-- right now "fedora 14-alpha" -- version of fedora
nor do you want "rpmforge " installed ( this is a "special built" repo
google "fedora rpmforge " for more info
