What are your monitor specs?

Why does the 'Monitor' section have odd settings?

If all of the section is correct, then you can generate modelines with that.

Also add more modes like

Modes "1024x768@85" "etc"

...in the screen section

This may not be the answer, but worth checking.
have you set your preferred resolution as your default?
Go to system>preferences>hardware>screen res, set your resolution and set 'make default'.
I got caught with similar behaviour and that was the answer.

Cheers,
Terry

Are these instructions from a Gnome Desktop, I'm using KDE, and yes I went into Admin > Display and set it to 1024x768, but that doesn't help.

Thanks.

Yes they are for Gnome, sorry I should have specified.
So, F8 KDE doesn't have any means of setting the default?

Cheers,
Terry

None that I can see.
It is the system-config-display app that runs.
