FC8 : Excessive traffic on new installation

Hi everyone,

I have just installed Fedora 8 on a 1GHz VIA EX1000 (CX700M2 chip set) motherboard with 1GB RAM and a 16GB Solid-State HDD. The monitor is 24" IIyama wide-screen. On the whole I am pleased with this as it found all the new hardware despite that VIA haven't written drivers for FC8 yet.

After a couple of days use I noticed a lot on Internet traffic even though I was not running any web software like Browser, Email, IM, Skype or Package updates.

I am on a capped Broadband service and this is maxing it out.

I looked at the services and stopped any unnecessary ones but to no avail.

I did a "netstat -tcp" to find that Python was responsible for most of it. I tried to kill it but it would not terminate. The only way I could stop it was to re-name Python and re-boot but obviously many programs won't work after that !!

What is causing this ? and more importantly, how do I stop this ?

Thanks in advance

Peter

Well, I know that if you run IDLE, somewhere it will mention that you may experience network traffic from Python and you may need to unblock it if you are running a firewall - but this only stupilates that it is only using the loopback networking interface, "lo".

Try installing a firewall, if you haven't already done so (maybe something like shorewall). I haven't had a firewall running on my machine in ages, as my router takes care of that (which is still disabled as my internet connection is through a VPN to a telco for my dad's work, running through their proxies and firewalls).

By any chances the python process you mentioned is "/usr/bin/python -tt /usr/sbin/yum-updatesd" ?
If so, it is the yum updater background process that will warning you when there are any new updates for fedora 8.

I noticed this too and you can kill it at any time using the -KILL flag.

It comes from the package "yum-updatesd" and if you want to, you can remove this package and just use pup to get any updates.

cheers,
