FC7 to 8 upgrade install hangs on dependency resolving

I am attempting to upgrade from FC7 to FC8. During dependency resolving, the system hangs. The progress bar progressed all the way to the end, but then nothing. It sat like that for several hours, and then required a reboot to get out of it. Can dependency resolution REALLY take over 5 hours?

You can run into that problem when attempting to upgrade from one major version number to another because of the differences in package versions and dependencies.

You are much better off making backups of /home and any files in /etc that you have manually tweaked, then do a clean install of Fedora 8. All dependencies should be included in the installation cd/dvd.

thanks

bigrigdriver, thanks for the reply! My instinct was to do a flat out install, but I've never done one and known how to save all the stuff I have created in version 7. You say /home and /etc eh? Will that include email addresses and "favorites" from my browser? All of my docs and pics should be in my /home directory. I'll give it a look and hope I got everything.

Thanks again!

sometimes it takes more than an hour to check the dependency.
so i take another method: mount the DVD under Fedora 7, the change the fedora.repo file in /etc/yum.repo.d/. after that use "yum upgrade " to update all the things. it can take in some error messages, which is meaningful than the long time waiting.

They're right. I left mine trying to resolve for about 4 hours. If there are issues with failing dependancies it's not going to finish this proccess it will continually loop eternally!

You need to remove those that are conflicting, but Anaconda isn't going to show you them.

So, you can do what I did. (What's actually recommended by fedora).

Click here and start with number 1.

Using yum you can see what files are actually conflicting and remove them manually.

You can also see a common list of packages that need to be removed and added manually here.

Some other packages that I had to manually remove (though I believe they were from livna repositories) were kdegames and xine.

If you are using livna repositories (not sure why you wouldn't be) then be sure and upgrade those too before typing #yum upgrade

Hope all this helps. Keep us posted.

Thank you all very much for your replies. I have been out of town and haven't had a chance to implement your suggestions. For the delay in response, I apologize. I'll give this a shot..thanks again!
