Question fc6 extras gutenprint-cups? Is this the same as cups?

Hi all

Almost the last thing to do on this fresh install is to try and get my Canon Ip4000 printer working. I was going to try the gutenprint rpm from the extras repo but see it has a gutenprint-cups as well. Is this the same as the cups I have installed with a fresh install of FC6.

I had printing working under FC5 but as I was a total newbie I never got it working properly. When I finally got broadband and upgraded my FC5 it totally never worked anymore, I think to do with upgrading cups to 1.2.

Have the printer on static ip, 192.168.1.104. Hostname WRX, plugged into router, it pings fine just need to sort out best driver now, mainly digressing because of below.

The misus absolutely caned me over printing problems under linux? Thats the main thing she does, likes to print out photos, and I was almost always chasing my tail with her on it. Luckily our small 80GB hard drive overflowed with her photos about the same time I totally wrecked FC5 with mass updates on the newly installed broadband. Thus I blamed everything on the hard drive and said

"Babycakes, we need to order a 400GB hard drive and I will be better off fresh installing dual boot windows and FC6 and things will be fine"

She replies

"just fix it, get this linux working properly, or why are we on linux again, you said linux this, windows spam that...stop tinkering, stop constantly updating, you built this computer for me, you got the laptop go play on that and build yourself another desktop"

The pressure has been really on me the last three days, (really full 3 days though, 3.30am efforts) but I have learnt enough in the last 6 months to bowl the whole 64bit setup reasonably well for a newbie but she is constantly over my shoulder, have I got the printer going yet, stuff the themes and get my printer going.

I made all the excuses in the world why I have left it to last.

"Sweetpea" I said "The printer is a peripherial and as such there is a process I must follow to get everything setup correctly and thus the peripherial being the said printer is last on the list"

She didnt quite believe me but I have handed the computer over to the family with everything setup I think and hope for a fully used desktop environment EXCEPT the printer. Thus I have gone to work and trolled through a couple of hundred pages on linux printing to get my head around it all again in the hope it will be a smooth exercise. Probably what I have been dreading the most in setting up linux again. It was all setup in 5minutes in windows damn it all.

Oh the pressure. I think I could have made it easier by not going down the 64bit route again but I have 64bit and I really wanted to say I am using 64bit, well and 32bit.

I probably should write a tutorial on how I went about it and the gotyas that got me, anaconda having a break down when setting static ip and clicking on extras, a known bug that I stumbled on tonite way after the fact and took me several hours to get around myself. I certainly was wondering if I was going down the right track there and then. And the other one I spent hours and hours and hours on, getting azurues to work, I set the system to only 32bit java, flash, and firefox2. What do I do, go download 64bit azureus and spent ages checking java, softlinks, staring blankly at the screen, before it finally clicked. Download 32bit azurues. Arghhh.

Anyway I digress, a lot

Any comments as always muchly appreciated.

Cheers Gimmee (I dont want anything, thats just my nickname)

You want both gutenprint rpm packages, consider them as additions to cups. Also see;

Well it wasnt bad at all. TheFC6 printer setup went very straight forward under KDE printer setup config GUI. IP4000 network printer working at 600dpi under Firefox2, gimp, and office. Still might have to massage the settings a little for photo paper but all in all everyone is happy with there settings and seem to love the FC6 environment.

Thanks for all the help with my posts in getting me here in the last six months. Almost feel I know enough and can go from newbie to, "just know enough to get me in the shit"

Thanks
