Question FC5 Reading wrong Mime Type

I have just installed a FC5 for the first time, having backed up all of my important data on a RW CD - installation went perfectly, so I then tried to install my data (JPEGS/OPEN OFFICE DOCS ODT/SXW) but unfortunately they wont open - I keep on getting the error message explaining that they show as a JPEG/Word doc etc, though are actually plain text documents even when I am trying to open a JPEG. On examining the properties tag on each file it shows the mime type as 'text/plain'. In desperation I have tried to open them in windows/centos (my old system) but get the same error. The data is really important to me so, any help would be appreciated.

What happens if you open the swxes from within OOo instead of doubleclicking them in a filemanager?

I get the option to open the file and choose the filter type, choosing the open office documen type a second message appears saying that the file is corrupt, before asking if open office should attempt to repair the file. If I agree and get it to attempt a repair, a follow message appears stating that the file could not be repaired, hence the file does not open.

Many Thanks

Matt
