FC5 Package Installation Problem

I have installed Red Hat Fedora Core 5. After installation, I tried to add more packages using add/remove packes but the packages manager gave an error the "List of packages cannot be obtained". I have even logged on as root user but it didnot work.

OK. I got this problem too. It turns out that when I have my eth0 on (maybe with internet connection too), then it will list of all packages.

This manager depends on yum, yum - is working online , so, to add packages you need internet connection, surely, you can also try to setup local repos for yum. We already discussed this.

Package Manager needs to improve

The purpose of Package Manager is to list of all packages which has installed on the system. It's add/remove software in MS. If you have the CD, you should be able to add/remove package from the CD. Seems like it's not right now because the packages are getting from yum.

It's better to be able to list all installed packages and only use yum when you update something and that is not on the CD.

Easy to use is way to get Fedora/Linux to become more popular. Don't need to be a geek to use Linux. Apple OS X is successful because they know how to keep it simple...

The reason this happens is yum tries to access the net repos everytime to give out a list. Say if a server of one of the repos is handling high load or if your isp has problems, then yum fails.

However thers a sweet little turnaround for this.

Install Kyum from the one of the repos and use Kyum to add/remove packages. Kyum gives you on the fly option to add/remove(enable/disable) repos, besides it doesn't automatically try connecting to the repos. Since Kyum is just a front-end for yum, it modifies the yum config file.

So next time you use yum (add/remove software) and u get the error, simply launch Kyum and disable the repos which might be the problem.

TIP : Better use Kyum for adding/removing packages. Its a gem

Can I add my install CDs to the yum?

Without some essential package (ifup and ifdown) I can't get online with my authorization app for the dependency problem.

It seems there is no hints in 'man yum'.

Thanks, I was about to post a thread about my problems trying to customize my setup after installing the base packages. For all the focus on user-friendliness, you'd think they'd set it up so it could install from the CDs "out of the box"...this is going to confuse any n00b that decides to add or remove a package from their FC5 system.
