fc5 gnome icons vanished

my yum is set to auto upgrade every day,
yesterday my desktop icons, (drives, shortcuts) wallpaper all vanished.
I have checked my gnome mountable disk settings
sys-> pref -> removable
all are ok.2 days ago
I redefine a wallpaper and on next login it is gone as well.
Desktop does not respond to any left or right clicks.

anyone else seen this? solution?

sounds like nautilus has crashed. try running it manually.

that worked

silly me I assumed naughty-less always ran on login

well it should do. i lose track of what gnome does and doesn't do without your permission... often if it's crashed itwon't restart things until you manually do, then it may remember you do want it and keep restarting it. gconf-editor is useful to fine tune these sorts of behaviours too.
