FC5 and VMWare Server
 

I would like to put the free download version of VMWare Server on the new machine which is currently running FC5. In looking at various posts it looks like things such as the install were pretty straightforward with FC4 but that (at least initially), things were a lot tougher with FC5.

I was wondering if things had improved at all regarding installations under FC5? I'll install FC4 if I have to but I'd like to try to go with FC5 if I can.

I have an Asus A8N5X MB, 2 Gb of ram, an Athlon 3800+ dual core processor, a 160 GB SATA drive, and a Sony DVD burner in the machine.

another very odd coincidence. i installed vmware server on fc5 this morning, and am now installing a second copy of FC5 within vmware... and it's all a total doddle. the vmware.com rpms install just fine and it's simple all the way.

After reading the EULA prior to getting to the actual download, it seems that the thing will die at a date in the future when the beta testing is done and they are ready to release the commercial product. I didn't want to risk having anything important trapped inside when that happens.

So I'm back at looking at the Workstation edition which it sounds like people are also having difficulties getting to run under FC5. Hope they get it sorted out. I really don't want to have to turn this machine into a dual boot.

the server product will NOT expire if you use a free serial number. I believe the beta versions expire as successive changes and fixes should be used in order to keep the product up to date. VMware Server used to be called VMware GSX server when it was a paid-for product, but it is now free, and WILL remain so, unlike VMware workstation and ESX server.

That's great news. Yes, the EULA that I was referring to was the one for the beta. I'll be standing by for the release of the actual server release. According to the website, it should be in the second quarter of 06 so that window just opened.

Hope it ends up being really solid with FC5 and that you weren't just lucky!! :)
