FC4 sun java

Just did a clean install of FC4 (package managers were starting to install packages that broke everything in FC3, so it was time for an upgrade)

I've spent the last 15 hrs or so fiddling with tutorials and sun's java, currently with the following results:

Used the jpackage tutorial/rpm to rebuild sun's jdk for FC4 (www.jpackage.org will get you close enough to find the rebuild package page etc). I've now installed the resulting RPMs, and I get the same result as the last 5 times I install the jre/jdk in various ways:

Firefox won't use the java plugin. It doesn't even try, so far as I can see; it just gives me the happy "you need a plugin for this" message and I can't find a way to force it to look at the plugin I gave it.

Azureus (the more crucial of the two ) is throwing an error that has been documented widely, but never explained in a way that seemed to fix MY issue:

Starting Azureus...
Java exec not found in PATH, starting auto-search...
Java exec found in /usr/java/jre1.5.0_05/bin/
Suitable java version found [/usr/java/jre1.5.0_05/bin/java = 1.5.0_05]
Configuring environment...
Loading Azureus:
/usr/java/jre1.5.0_05/bin/java -Xms16m -Xmx128m -cp "/bin/*.jar" -Djava.library.path="/bin" -Dazureus.install.path="/bin" org.gudy.azureus2.ui.swt.Main ''
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/gudy/azureus2/ui/swt/Main
Azureus TERMINATED.

I'm at my wits end. Java is not my specialty; I just want it to work well enough to run java-based programs with it. If anyone is around with more expertise than myself, I'd love to get some advice.

I recently upgraded to FC4 and have had tremendous success with java, including running java applications (Zend studio, limewire) and have java working in Firefox as well. I used the instructions at Unofficial Fedora FAQ to install java.

I'm afraid that's about as much help as I can provide. Good luck.

Right. I did that. And installed the resulting rpms.

That particular spot is pretty much the current configuration of my machine.

Have you tried using azureus with that installation?

Have now... and it's working for me...
Code:
Starting Azureus...
Java exec found in PATH. Verifying...
Suitable java version found [java = 1.5.0_04]
Configuring environment...
Loading Azureus:
java -Xms16m -Xmx128m -cp "/usr/local/azureus/Azureus2.jar:/usr/local/azureus/swt.jar:/usr/local/azureus/swt-mozilla.jar:/usr/local/azureus/swt-pi.jar" -Djava.library.path="/usr/local/azureus" -Dazureus.install.path="/usr/local/azureus" org.gudy.azureus2.ui.swt.Main ''
changeLocale: no message properties for Locale 'English (United States)' (en_US), using 'English (default)'
You'll notice my JRE is finding the PATH environment variable it needs where as yours is not. The key indication in yours is the error:

Code:
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:
which I seem to recall having to do with the CLASSPATH environment variable. I could be wrong. Try googling and reading other peoples problems with that specific error.

Also, it's strange that your installation has java in /usr/java/jre1.5.0_05/bin/java where as mine is in /usr/bin considering that we both used the Fedora FAQ method to install java.

So, I don't know exactly what to tell you but I strongly feel it has to do with your java PATH vars.

Good luck.

Micah

I realized I hadn't *fully* removed the previous rpms (files and configuration) so I did, and then re-installed, but the azureus problem was a soft-link issue.

I've put the libjava plugin into /usr/lib/firefox-1.0.6/plugins, and it's still not coming up. Any ideas?

(Not coming up means I get nothing; firefox just displays the "you need a plugin" message with the puzzle piece icon)
