Sound... No sound at all after error in mplayer, playing DVD Movie.
(mplayer did not exit - but played video. Tried different audio tracks too. No error pops up on subsequent mplayer sessions! Running gmplayer in cli produces nothing special in stdout.)
Totem and realplayer act like they play sound - nothing on speakers but hiss - hiss changes volume with on-screen volume control.)
No test sound in souncard detection - cannot play ogg or sound in any app. No system sounds either.
Previouse to today - sound worked just fine.

Alsamixer - no muting

take a look at alsa-project.org, and look up your soundcard.

Thanx - I know you mean well.

All the project does is tell me I'm using the correct driver. I listed my soundcard with the previous post - did you find anything I didn't?

Note: sound used to go OK - so I know ALSA was fine.

Well - this has stumped everybody

Though I have had some private replies to the effect that I'm not the only one for whome MPlayer is associated with broken sound.

I have reinstalled all the sound rpms from the DVD - to no avail. In fact it broke my sound even more <doh!>
So I have resorted to reinstalling FC4 <grrr> - however: I could, this time, use my experience to customise the install so only what I use will be in there.

This time everything works great!

Interesting to note:
My soundcard has two speaker jack-sockets. They are labelled "left" and "right". My speakers have but a single stereo jack.
I have always used this in the "right" socket as the only one that produces sound. (Under linux, the left one is mute but under win98 the left produced sound for the left speaker.)
That was previously.

After reinstalling - I discovered that I now get sound from the left socket while the right is mute!

Now - I did try swapping sockets while I was having issues so I know there was another problem too.
However - it is possible that I fixed the problem and didn't notice because I didn't keep swapping to check.

Further - the MPlayer folk say there is an issue with prelinking in FC4 conflicting with the win32 codecs. Probably exacerbated by FC4 using gcc4 links and MPlayer and Real being compiled with gcc3.2 ... It dosn't pay to be too up to date

The mjm FC4 MPlayer install notes (from the resources.) suggests a workaround.

I didn't do this last time - but made sure I did this time.

I've tried to duplicate the fault - and failed.

So - hopefully - that was it

i mentioned alsa-project.org not just for you to look up your sound card; but while i'm there, did you make sure that you've got the latest versions of the driver, library, and utilities? Yum won't update all of them, if i recall correctly. Also, there are mailing lists there, and there have been many posts about come channels working, and others not (although i have no idea if it was for your soundcard). are you running 64-bit fc4? i know that in recent pacakges, there were issues, because of library locations.

did i find anything you didn't? no, because i didn't look. that one's up to you.

hope you figure it out. i agree that it's a pain. my sound didn't work, then did, and now doesn't again, because i installed a new kernel.

I had a similar problem.

Try Sound&Video->Kmix->Switches, and check if all your switches are ON.

thanks. muting wasn't the problem for me (everything's muted by default, FYI to anyone reading this thread), but maybe it'll help others...

Muting is the most common issue with ALSA.

sgl: Yeah - got the newest drivers... but remember, this driver was working.
I asked if you had found anything I hadn't because you seemed so sure that site would help. And I know about reading other mailing lists and development sites too. I believe I indicated this in the original post - but I may not have been as clear about it as I needed to.

The main reason for posting here was that there seemed very little relating to this issue, and none of it actually relevant, anywhere. These forums make a nice place to keep weird (and even wyrde) problems while giving possible solutions a good airing.

In that contect, you are right to point out the various things like the development site - it contributes to the forum even if it dosn't help me. I didn't want my reply to erroniously direct people away from the site - and I know that I don't usually direct someone to research a site unless I have actually seen the answer they were looking for in it.

BTW: would you edit your profile to include your distro and location. Then it will show up on the left like mine

and help people put your replies and questions in context. (Otherwise they only have the "newbie" tag to go by you see ...)

another common issue is applications not being set to the correct sound driver, alsa, oss, ect

setting this up is done on a per-app basis. should be less of an issue with distros that set everything up for you, but if you compile from souce or use a distro that doesnt do as good of a job at pre-configuring things, it may be a concern.

I didn't say that I was sure it would help; I simply referred you to the site, because it is one of the first places to check, for ALSA problems, and I saw no indication in your original post that you knew about the site, or about mailing lists referred to there, that could help. Maybe I missed that. And because FC4 is new, there's thrreads going on about it. Remember, I was trying to help you, nothing more.

I don't look at referring someone to a site as being right or wrong. That site can get you to the Alsa-user list, where experts answer questions like yours.

Not sure why a context would be needed for a "check out this site for info" post. I guess you're annoyed with my post. Keep in mind I was only trying to help you. As for a "newbie" tag, I'll probably get around to changing the profile, eventually, but I'm not particularly worried about how others think about the "newbie" tag.

Regardless, I do hope you finally got things resolved.
