FC4 kernel compile issues

Some minor info about my machine:
KDE version: 3.4.2-0.fc4.1 Red Hat
Hostname: localhost.localdomain
System: Linux
Release: 2.6.12-1.1398_FC4
Machine: i686

now lets get to my problem(s):
I attempted to recompile the 2.6.12 kernel to use ACPI power managment since my computer is, well, at the very least VERY power hungry and I don't need to be heating up my apartment with it all the time. I would like to have the ability to suspend (or even hibernate) my desktop computer, as bizarre as this sounds.
So, I go and fetch the kernel's src.rpm that matches my kernel from RedHat's official servers and I install it. Now, the is pretty much what happens:

I am su'ed for the entire process, but I logged into KDE as my user

(1) make menuconfig
- bunch of crap spits with some warnings about signedness (what is going on here with the warnings?)
(2) make
CHK include/linux/version.h
CHK include/asm-i386/asm_offsets.h
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `init/main.o', needed by `init/built-in.o'. Stop.
make: *** [init] Error 2
[root@localhost 2.6.12-1.1398_FC4-i686]#

As you can see, I have a problem here. What is going on, why is make dieing on me, and how do I fix it?

I normally just follow this guide, make sure you use the .config file from redhat as a starting point.

FC4 compiles now

If you're still having troubles, try installing (or forcing an upgrade) with kernel-devel-2.6.11*.[arch}.rpm. Worked for me.

I'm having the same problem, what did you end up doing to fix it?

And also since doing it (and getting the errors) my USB mouse has stopped working and I now get an error when I boot saying 'No volume control elements and/or dvices found.', I am very new with Linux, so help is appreciated.

Cheers
