FC4/FC5 x64 persistent freeze....

Hey all,

I recently built a new machine and loaded FC4 x64. It started freezing almost immediately, I assumed it was probably a goofy X problem so I switched it to run level 3..no dice. Still freezes up. I decided it must be ACPI or some goofy nuance with the PCI bridge etc...so I disabled ACPI on the motherboard and wiped/reinstalled with FC5 x64. System is still freezing up persistently. The messages log is wiped every time I have to reboot the thing so I am at a loss as to where to start.

System specs:

ASUS P5RD1-VM Motherboard
Intel x64 2.8 Ghz
1 GB Kingston PC3200
Seagate 160 GB SATA
No name DVD-ROM

Has anybody else had this problem? Can anybody give me some places to start looking for clues?

There are at few possibilities:

1- Insufficient or flaky power from your power supply. Replace/upgrade power supply.
2- CPU fan not spinning. Correct/replace.
3- Memory errors (run memtest86)
4- Overclocking? Stop it.
5- A high current load on the same circuit (like a laser printer). Move it to another circuit.
6- A misbehaving PCI card (remove them one at a time).
7- A motherboard mounting post in the wrong place. Remove it.

I have had that problem and would have thought it had been fixed now. Mine was down to running apache 2.0 on the 64 bit. I had to go to earlier versions of apache to stop the problem. Is apache running when you boot up. Just a guess I tried Susu 9 and Fed 4 64 bit versions and they still froze.

I got Suse 9.1 to work without apache though and occassionally still froze. Tried Core 4 worse than mandrake and spoke to engineer working for for Redhat they said they knew about the problem with apache 64 bit but wasn't sure if they would have it fixed in Core 5.

The Mandrake 10.2 did it so I went back to the only one that I know works Mandrake 10.1. Only difference from my setup to yours is I have several Gigabyte boards for 64 bit

Many hundreds of thousands of people run apache 2 on 64-bit (myself included).
