A lot of people hate up2date with a passion - too many bugs, too slow, etc. Those people head right over to the refuge of apt-get and synaptic to solve their problems...I would recommend going with that option for you.
First install apt-get (you might even be able to get it through yum with "yum install apt-get" as root). Then grab Synaptic (
http://www.nongnu.org/synaptic/) as a graphical frontend to apt if you want. You will then be able to grab all of the latest RPMs and install them without getting into nitty-gritty dependency issues (all handled by apt).
I know theoretically that up2date is supposed to handle the dependencies, but things still don't work smoothly with it. I have been listening to many users who peg it as a program that needs major work...I agree. For managing packages on a red hat system, I don't think it gets much better than the combination of rpm with apt-get (and of course, its graphical front end synaptic).
