FC3 KDE not loading after yum update

I ran a yum update last night. The update brought me from kernel .741 to kernel .770. I restarted my laptop later during the night and when it rebooted, KDE would not load. I can enter failsafe and I can use Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get to a shell, but I cannot login as root or a user. I have checked and all my files allow root login and KDE is set to be the default desktop. What should I do?

rescue cd or reinstall
