I have an old PII 350 with an on board riva128 video card and a 15" LCD monitor. I can't seem to be able to change the resolution for the signon screen or the root login - it's stuck on 1280 X 960 (or whatever it is) but I want it at 1024X768. My monitor is not happy with that setting (nor is the fine print good for my eyes).
Settings > display won't open (when I try to run it from a terminal prompt I get a long error message). Under my user account I can change resolution in preferences > screen resolution and it sticks. However, when I make the same change under the root login, it doesn't survive logging off. Once I get it working, I will do most of my admin using MC so I'm really not worried about the root login. But (and I think it's related), I need to change the resolution for the signin screen. My monitor gives "out of range" message on the screen, and I'm worried that may not be good!

Thanks for the link. However, the resolution it's going to (1280X960) isn't even listed in that section. The max I've got is 1024X768 (listed first on the line). Therefore, it must be getting it's information from somewhere else.
