I am assuming that you have physically switched off the system and then on again?

I had much the same problem on RH9 once when I had a bad DVD-ROM drive - sometimes it would stop working and cause some kind of IDE lockup that neccessitated a reboot, and sometimes even a physical shutdown of the system (to clear the IDE "block" apparently) before I would be able to get my system back up.

What you are describing sounds like maybe you have a bad HDD or DVD/CD-ROM drive. Something on your motherboard could also have gone awry - KDE crashing should never cause the type of inability to boot you describe, so I suspect something else is wrong / also wrong, and whatever it is is hardware related and not KDE (or Linux's) fault for that matter.
