FC3, 4, 5 won't install; RH ES3 will--huh?

Hi Folks,

I've got an old box (with a 1GHz Athlon processor just to give you a feel for it). I just wanted to have Linux on it for serving as a backup to my web server when I want to do maintenance on the main server. Well... so I tried FC 5--it locks up part way into the install (sometimes when trying to format the disk, sometimes at other points; it's not consistent). FC4 and FC3 behave essentially the same way--no go.

Well, I've got a boxed version of Red Hat Enterprise 3 sitting around so I thought, I'd give it a shot. It installs without any difficulty.

Anyone with any insight as to why this might be who can clue me in?

Thanks!

John

FC5 installation failed on my 1 Ghz PIII too (but worked on a 1.5 Ghz Celeron M laptop), but instead of locking up packages would fail to install at random times, and since they've dumbed down the UI of the installer, the ONLY freakin' option is to reboot - no way of just skipping the package and continuing to the next one or even retrying. FC3 installed fine on the same machine, though... It looks like their installer seriously needs some fixing.
