FC2 startup issues

Last time I shut down my Fedora Core 2, the computer froze. The desktop disappeared, with the background picture still shown. The computer was frozen, I could nothing but turn off the power. When I afterwards switch it on, the computer hangs just after showing the grub boot menu. The boot messages are:

Uncompressing Linux. . . Ok, booting the kernel
audit (1095607534.339:0): initialized
Red Hat nash version 3.5.22 starting
_

whereafter the computer hangs. I am running kernel version 2.6.8-1.521.

Any ideas on how to recover the system?

Regards

Martin
