FC 5 on Dell Inspiron 6000

Did any try to install FC 5 on it? Any problems?

Thanks

Plenty of reviews here

http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/dell.html

But none for FC5 but few for FC4 so there shouldn't be many problems

Ok, I just installed FC5 on a new harddrive. The installation went flawlessly. Now my question is how I can get the wireless going. Where should I look for setting such as WPA.....etc.

Has Fedora detected and configured the device?

Else your going to have to do some research on ndiswrapper (basically a utility to enable you to use windows network card drivers on linux).

Yes, it detects Intel wireless as eth0. No tools for configure it as wireless nic.

Ok, I finally got it working after I follow these instructions

Do you have the Intel915 graphic driver set? FC4 failed miserably for me because it would not boot into X. Got as far as installed and customized, but X wouldn't boot with non-VESA drivers (with that, what's the point?) of the Intel915 as other members on this board have the same problems.

Yes, I do have the Intel graphic set to 800x600 after the installation. I'm not too happy about it. I also have a problem with Firefox 1.5.0.1 which did not take the plugin of Flash.

Hmm.. That's absolutely unacceptable for a native 1680x1050 screen. :(

I had problems with suspend/resume in the past with FC4 on Inspiron 6000. I finally gave up trying after a while. Does anyone know if suspend works better out of the box on this laptop?

Menace Inc 03-29-2006 06:13 PM

I don't think so. My first wake-up worked, the 2nd time hung my laptop. I didn't realize this until you mentioned it here.

Hi, I've just intalled FC5 on my Inspiron 6000, even suspend (and it works very well). I haven't checked the DVD-DMA problem yet, but think it is still there...

ticklemeozmo 04-05-2006 09:34 AM

What are your system specs, or your service tag so other can compare theirs?

With all the different options on the insprion it doesn't help anyone by saying it works for you without giving details. It's akin to saying "my car works just fine today, I don't understand why yours doesn't".

jpk 04-05-2006 11:04 AM

Ok, sorry ;) I crashed my car last year, so it doesn't work anymore.. )

Her you go:
Pentium M750 (1.86GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 533MHz FSB)
1024 MB 400MHz DDR2 SDRAM 2x512
ATI Mobility Radeon X300 128Mb
80GB IDE HDD
8X DVD +/-RW
Intel 2915 ABG MiniPCI WLAN

I can post my bootlog as well, if it helps...

jpk 04-05-2006 11:17 AM

And by the way, there are some other things:
1. still no DMA support for DVD playback ;(((
2. I haven't tested the modem, I'm not sure it's detected..
