I've got FC 4 running on a machine with an Nvidia Riva TNT2. I wanted to get the resolution higher than 800x600, so I decided to try upgrading the driver, which said that I needed to install XFree. Went and got it, installed it, and now my GUI won't reload anymore. The GUI works great when I'm logging in, but then it takes me to a really stripped down looking couple of windows that only has a terminal and little window in the upper left corner with 4 buttons on it saying "Client List", "Session Log", "Checkpoint", and "Shutdown."
I backed up my previous X11R6 directory to another location, but replacing the modified X11R6 folder with the backed up one doesn't fix the problem. I tried deleting the new one, replacing the old one, then reinstalling XFree a few times, but no luck. When I try to run XFree86 -autoconfig it looks like it starts up mostly fine, but then stops and sits with a gray background and an x cursor for the mouse. When I hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 I get an error that it can't init a font path element with a directory ending in "X11/CID/" (I don't have it at that point to look right now, but if you need to know, I can reinstall it again and see).
I'd really appreciate any help you guys could give. I'm pretty inexperienced with linux, and at this point I don't know what else to do besides reinstall the whole thing (and I'd really rather not have to do that).
Well, I tried what routers said, and I was able to do what it, but it didn't fix the problem. So, I think I've probably irreparably screwed up my linux install. *sigh* I guess I'll just reinstall it. At least I haven't got much of anything on there anyway, so it's not a really big deal.
Thanks for the other tips, though, guys. I think after I reinstall it I'll try your solutions first instead of trying to install Xfree again. Would have been nice if I'd figured that out before, but, live and learn, right?
no problem and learn will never finish as long as we can help each other
