FC 3 Can I boot to console login only?

I'm new to linux having only used knoppix off and on for a month and now Fedora. I installed Fedora Core 3 and I'm curious about if I can change the boot method.

Ideally I would like it to boot up without the Fedora graphical splash screen and only show the initilization in text and then sit at the login as: prompt. Right now it's displaying the Fedora splash screen while it boots, and then it loads gnome.

If I can change this can someone point me to either a howto or specifically where I would change it. Also how would I then get into gnome when I did want to use the GUI console?

Thanks.

Edit the file /etc/inittab. There is a line that probably looks like:

id:5:initdefault

Change the '5' to a '3'. Run level 5 is with X and run level 3 is a console login.

To start gnome, do the command 'startx' or 'init 3'

Perfect, that's exactly what I was looking for. Thank you very much.

Here's a better way:

Edit the /boot/grub/grub.conf or /etc/grub.conf (same file). This file controls which kernels or OS's are listed in grub when it starts up. On the lines that have kernel parameters there are places that say "rhgb". I suppose that stands for redhat graphical boot. Remove the word "rhgb" from the kernel lines and save the file. When you boot up, X will not load until right before you sign in. If you do it that way you can set your inittab runlevel back to 5.

dear, you have solved your problem. However, you may also select manually whether you want to log in to GNOME or KDE or Console in your fedora login screen.
Regards
