Failure popping email

FC6, and I have been popping email, using dovecot, for years, now. Suddenly, I get a window from either T-Bird or Evo, saying something failed while authorizing me.
I haven't changed passwords, or anything else. I use 127.0.0.1 as the addy to pop, and dovecot is listening on the pop port, nmap shows 110 open. Has anyone an idea where to look to correct this issue? I am out of ideas. Thanks, Ray

OK, FINALLY tracked this down. WHEW! Here's what happened:
Without recalling it, I had messed around in the graphical "users and groups" thing and added myself to roots group. Dovecot, by default, logs into syslog. There I found "Users in root's group are not allowed to log in". Hmph. I changed myself back to NOT be in that group, and all is well again.
This, for anyone encountering the same, strange problem.
