Extremely slow Windows-to-Linux transfers

I'm trying to copy files from my Windows (XP) computer to my Fedora Core 4 computer, and through both Samba and ftp I max out at around 50 KB/s. What's up with that? I'vegot around 100 GB to transfer and I'd rather it didn't take a month. :-)

I should add that if I transfer several files at once, they all get about 50 kB/s each.

EDIT: I just set up an ftp server on the windows machine and I could download files to the linux machine at around 50 kB/s, but then the speed got even slower and the transfer eventually stalled completely.

How many users do you have on your network? Are you using Samba simply as a file server or also for domain control?

I have the same problem. I'm running Fedora Core 4 with all the updates. Transfer rates seem good with other protocols but are aweful with samba.

I think I've tracked it down to problem with my network. I think I have a bad port or cable and it seems to be getting stuck if data is only flowing one way. SMB must be a very one sided conversation.
