Everything looks good, but no printout.. Fedora, Samba, etc

Guys,

This is maddening. I know I'm almost there, but I'm missing something. I have three machines on my network.. two XP and one Fedora core 3 server (kernel 2.6.12-1.1381). One of my goals is to setup a print server for the XP machines. I have SAMBA installed and running correctly (I have five directories on the server mapped as shared drives on XP.. no problems). I can browse these directories from the XP explorer.

The problem is my printer. I have an HP officejet 5510 (all-in-one) connected via USB port to the server. I can print to it locally just fine. Printer has been added to my smb.conf file as follows:

[Printers]
comment = All Printers
path = /var/spool/samba
browseable = yes
writeable =yes
use client driver = yes

Printer is viewable to the XP machines, and I can add them as networked printers in XP. Printer status is shown as "ready". I have sent simple text files to the printer from XP, but I get nothing. XP shows one print job in queue, and it goes away after a minute or so, but the printer just sits there. What am I missing here? This should work.

Thanks for your advice..

try changing the paper settings to A4 instead of US Letter of your printerdriver on the XP system and/or your FC3 server

*** update to this thread ***

Still haven't gotten the printing to work. I have done the following:

1. did an update via "yum" to fedora core 4. Not much help (although, to my great surprise, scanning from the officejet 5510 works with xsane).
2. installed the hplip driver. no help there either.
3. disabled SELinux and all firewalls. Still, no love.

Interesting note: I went to the cops admin page (localhost:631) and enabled the banner page. When I printed a test page from the XP machine, it printed the banner but nothing else. Not sure what to make of that. I also noticed that jobs sent from the XP machine look like (for example):

officejet-38 smbprn.00000002 Test Page nobody 97k completed at
Sun 15 Oct 2006 06:12:34 PM EDT

So it's not a "zero byte file" as some have suggested. Perhaps the XP part of the file is corrupt?

Also, when I boot my PC into Fedora (core 3), I can add the printer and print to it without issue.

Any ideas? I think it's definitely something XP related, but I can't figure it out.

TIA
