error "3 unknown user 'named'"

I recently upgraded my FC3 install to FC4. Under FC3 my logrotate app ran fine. Now, when I run logrotate as follows:

/usr/sbin/logrotate /etc/logrotate.conf

I get this error:

error: named:3 unknown user 'named'

I suspect the upgrade did something to the passwd or group files but I can't figure out the cause. Any ideas?

Add the following to your /etc/passwd file:
Code:
named:x:25:25:Named:/var/named:/sbin/nologin
And this to /etc/group:
Code:
named:x:25:named

Thanks for the feedback! Before I make changes, I always try to understand them...

Is the "named" user and group new to FC4? Why would the install (or in this case upgrade from FC3) not create this account?

Thanks,
Mike

It is not new.
named is "name-d" - or the DNS server on your machine "Name-daemon"

Should be there. My FC4 box has it....not sure why you don't.....did you install named?

root@box# which named

hmmm. interesting....

I don't have a DNS service installed/running. I checked the passwd file from my FC3 backup and it did not have a 'named' user account either.

Why would logrotate run under the 'named' account? (Or more interestingly, why did it work under FC3 without a named account?)

Thanks,
Mike
