DWL 650+ What To Do Now?

Hey guys. I have had great success with using my dlink card using RH8 and 9. I just formatted everything and started fresh with FC2. I'm trying to find those old installation instructions i had at first, but i can't. I have found others, but they are scaring me, saying something that because FC2 uses kernel 2.6.x that i have to do stuff witht he kernel tree and what not? I'm confused...can i just follow the old instructions have it work alright? and on that note...does anyone have the link to any of the older instructions? i'm talking acx100 ver 6 and backwards.

Wink

I used the acx100 driver with FC1 for my DWL-650+ so far and I'm also planning to switch soon to FC2. A good page for instructions for the most recent driver is Craig's Acx100 Guide for Linux, http://www.houseofcraig.net/acx100_howto.php. There you still have a link to the old instructions, however they do not work anymore with FC2.

Ah, that's what i thought. I have been trying to follow house of craig and the readme files, but nothing was working. Until lastnight, i have been trying to install it while logged into gnome, but under user, not SU. I keep forgetting that, even though i'm logged into user, but logged in SU through terminal, there are still SU commands that just don't work. I have to try again, but in SU.

I don't know if you want to fresh install FC2...if your doing an upgrade, you should be ok, but quite a few small but very annoying problems with FC2.

I did already install FC2 from scratch, and also find some litle problems very annoying - Synaptics, the GUI-frontend for APT not working well, the rpm packages that could not be installed anymore by right-clicking on them, some programs that do not recognize the data backed up under FC1 (Gramps). Finally, the updated Craig's page was not available yet, so I reinstalled FC1. I'll try again in some weeks - hopefully there will be a good number of updates.

what do you mean about craigs updated page is not available yet? are you saying that we'll have to wait a couple more weeks until we can get our cards working in FC2?

I have been fooling around with start_script, and when i make DHCP = 0, then everything goes through just fine, but i can't connect or anything. But, once i make DCHP=1, i get the same error again. DHCP=1 means that i get my IP addy automaticly from my router, where as DHCP=0 means i set it up manualy. With the way my network is setup, i need to have it DHCP=1...atleast thats how i setup the entire network. Is there something here that i'm missing that i don't get?

thnx,
jay

update: ok, i was fooling around again, and figured i should try to ping other computer on the network AND the router. I did, with success. So, if i'm able to log into the router, and ping all the other computers, how come i don't have an acctual internet connection? and why is setting DHCP =1 causeing errors? Are these problems one in the same?

thnx

WOOOOTT!!!!! I'm on using my card right now :-D

ok, heres the deal. which dhcpcd and which probe came up empty, but which dhclient came back with a file path. so, according to craig, i had to add a certain line to the start_net script. very good, except it was giving me all that network not found crap. that was where i was stuck, until i kept looking it over and realized it was asking for some wlan0 file and it also said something about a /sbin/dhclient-script...with in there i found it looking for something in the /etc/sysconf/network-scripts/ folder. Now, i figured it was prolly looking for the ifcfg-wlan0(check spelling) file that we had to create for the older versions of this driver. So, i created it again, and now here i am, it finaly works. WOOOT WOOOT!!!!

thnx guys for your help
jay

Question Everything is working, except for dhcp..

First of all, thanks to all on this thread. I am now looking at the internet through Linux, the way it should be! (the 650+ is up and running) with FC2

I had to give it a hard coded ip address/resolv.conf file, which is a pain though.

I am admitting my cluelessness here, and am looking for help.

the start_net script has a call to 'dhcpcd' which doesn't seem to exist in FC2. Did you folks change it to dhclient? If so, I'll read the man page and see what I need to do to get it running. If not, could someone point me to the 'secret' to getting dhcp client to work?

Thanks!

i'm using dhcpclient. here is what i have as my start script:

# Please edit here

DEV=wlan0

#ESSID="MainOfficeExt" # THIS IS CASE SeNsItIvE!! any == associate to any ESSID
# Default rate configured as 11Mbps to not cause connection problems with non-22Mbps hardware...
RATE=22M
#CHAN=6 # it's useful to try to stick to channels 1, 6 or 11 only, since these don't overlap with other channels
#TXPOWER=16 # 16 == 16.5dBm, 18 == 18dBm (default)
MODE=Managed # Auto == auto-select Managed or Ad-Hoc depending on environment
DEBUG=0xb
#KEY="CADFADBAAD" # WEP64
ALG=open # open == Open System, restricted == Shared Key

USE_DHCP=1 # set to 1 for auto configuration instead of fixed IP setting
#IP=192.168.0.102
#NETMASK=255.255.255.0
#GATEWAY=192.168.0.254

# Usually no editing should be required below this line...
# -- unless you want this script to fetch stuff with dhcp

#########################################

It took me awhile to figure out why i was having trouble with everything originaly NOT commented out. Then, after some reading of error messages, i figured that it was looking for a script in /etc/sysconfic/network_scripts/. All i did was add a file called ifcfg-wlan0. This is what i have in that file:

MODE=Managed
#ESSID=MainOfficeExt
ESSID=MainOffice
#KEY=CADFADBAAD
KEY=FADCADBAAD

IPV6INIT=no
ONBOOT=yes
USERCTL=no
PEERDNS=no
TYPE=Wireless
DEVICE=wlan0
BOOTPROTO=dhcp

The commented lines are for when i'm near my other AP. I think this should work for you. After this setup, whenever u lose a connection, or ur card drops dead, just login as SU and run the start script again.

I sure hope this is what u are looking for, and i hope this helps others out too.

I'll give it a try tonight (at work now, and I have a good old fashioned wire there...)

Thanks again to all who struggled in this thread, so I didn't have to!

Hope I can help someone else with something I'm a little more knowledgable on..
