During installation--"video mode not supported"

I am attempting to install Fedora Core 3 using the GUI installation. I get a blank screen with a dialog box that floats around the screen which says, "video mode not supported". From some other posts on this site, I take it that this is due to a problem with the horizontal and vertical sync rates. The solution appears to be updating the X configuration file with the correct sync rates.

My question is, since this is happening during an install from CD, how do I change this? Do I have to do a non-gui install to get around this?

Thanks,
David Holt

It could also be that you have too high a resolution/color bit option selected for your display adaptor. Try installing with a lower resolution at no higher than 16 bit color. You can easily change it later.

I'm not familiar with the FC3 GUI install, but if in doubt, I would go for a text-based install. It can give you more control and it's not hard if you have all your hardware details to hand before you start.

Thanks, mikieboy.

I did a text-based install and that allowed me to finish the installation. Then I booted into run level 1 so that X didn't start. Then I was able to edit xorg.conf with the correct horiz. and vert. sync rates. Then I was able to boot into X without a problem.

However, the fonts seem very fuzzy in Fedora. I don't think the problem is with my monitor, because they are very crisp in Windows. Is this also a configuration issue?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I can't say I've experienced fuzzy fonts but you can try this. If you are using KDE, launch the Control Centre and under Appearance/themes select the Fonts tool. Check the Use Anti-aliasing for Fonts option to enable font smoothing.
If you are in Gnome, select the Applications>Desktop Preferences>Font menu from the Gnome panel. The Font Rendering area has options for font smoothing. The Monochrome option disables font smoothing, the others enable it.
If none of this works post back.

Best of luck

Mikieboy
