Don't have privileges to install necessary packages?!!I am root!!!!
I have a fresh install of Fedora 9 since Suse 10.3 didn't want to cooperate. I log in as root and try to install anything (updates, rpms for repo data, anything) and I get the following message; Failed to Install: you do not have the necessary privileges to install local packages.
I am root, what happened to the obey me?? btw I am fairly certain it has nothing to do with SELinux, as I have disabled it in the grub.conf (i think, yeah selinux=0). I am tired and have given up on this until tomorrow night, but if anyone can point me in the right direction or shoot an idea or two my way that would be cool.
Thanks in advance
to install an rpm try this :
press Ctrl+Alt+F1 (a text console) login as root (it's not safe to login as root in graphical mode)
search your rpm package and install it like this : rpm -ivh yourpackagename.rpm for an upgrade instead of -ivh use -Uvh
-i is for install -U is for upgrade vh are progress bar and percentage(not quite necessary)
if you have all the dependencies installed that might be required by yourpackagename.rpm then the package should be installed with no problems otherwise it will not install until dependencies are added
a more simple approach to installing things is yum if you have an internet connection
in the same text console logged in as root type :
yum install yumex -y
this will install a graphical interface for installing programs easy easy and do upgrades to your whole system!
yum upgrade -y looks more easy but you can update the system with yumex to
using yumex you can simply install/uninstall programs just clicking with you mouse
