Distro updates (Gnome 2.8)

Hello all,
last week, Gnome 2.8 was announced from but the site provides only the source files. They said that users should better wait for their distro-specific packages.
Has anyone got any idea how long will this take (or usually takes)?
I can't wait for it any longer!!!!

It depends on the distro. Some distro will build GNOME and KDE binaries as soon as the release is out and others wait till the next major release of their OS. Check on your distro's website or mailing lists.

Bear in mind that GNOME 2.8 has some significant new external dependencies (hal, dbus, udev, howl etc.), so installing the new version of GNOME on an existing system won't make the new features work.

I'd suggest either:

a) Restraining yourself if it's a system that you really need to work.

b) Installing Fedora 3 Test 2, which has the new GNOME and all the system plumbing needed to make it work.
