Directory size more than 30MB on ext3 FS, what should I do?

Hi,

On FC4 with ext3 file system, i have setup mysql logging to /var/log/mysql/ directory, and also configured logrotare for those log files.

2 days ago logrotare was suffering from Segmentation fault error, and when tracing the problem, I have take a look at /var/log and it shows:

Quote:
ls -la /var/log
............................
-rw------- 1 root root 14905910 May 18 12:16 messages
-rw------- 1 root root 16117019 May 14 09:13 messages.1
-rw------- 1 root root 10084883 May 7 04:05 messages.2
-rw------- 1 root root 12212894 Apr 30 04:04 messages.3
-rw------- 1 root root 13270264 Apr 23 04:03 messages.4
drwxr-xr-x 2 mysql mysql 36007936 May 18 11:33 mysql
-rw-r----- 1 mysql mysql 1637 May 18 11:29 mysqld.log
-rw-r----- 1 mysql mysql 126 Apr 9 14:10 mysqld.log.1
-rw-r----- 1 mysql mysql 0 Apr 2 04:03 mysqld.log.2
-rw-r----- 1 mysql mysql 0 Mar 26 04:03 mysqld.log.3
............................
The directory /var/log/mysql has size of 36 MB and I am confused, all other directories have size of 4096B, i can CD to it, but i can not list the files in there,
Quote:
ls /var/log/mysql
hangs, and show no thing until i Ctrl^C .

what is the problem with this directory?, can some one guide me what to do to solve this, i have tried
Quote:
rm -rfd /var/log/mysql
but it also hangs.

Regards.

Time to run a filesystem check. Boot up the FC4 CD into rescue mode (type 'linux rescue' at the CD's boot prompt). When given the option, don't mount your hard drive partition(s). At the prompt, for each partition on your hard drive, enter (for example):

e2fsck -C -y /dev/hda1

Thanks,

The machine is a remote server which I access only using SSH, also it is a working mail server, so I need a solution to be performed remotly,

I think I will force disk check with auto repare on next boot , and reboot.
