Direct Rendering for older video cards/chipsets

June 25 2010: Project closed: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showpo...8&postcount=93
Thanks to all who participated.

Fedora includes 3D video drivers that provide direct (aka "hardware-accelerated") rendering (DRI) for a number of older and off-name (i.e., other than ATI or NVidia) video chipsets/cards. Many can be activated by simply configuring the OS correctly.

A few of the DRI video drivers are not included in the current release or are disabled, for various reasons. The ATI mach64 driver is one, due (apparently) to (resolved) security concerns and/or sheer apathy. The SIS driver is another. However, the source code is available from dri.freedesktop.org git. Since I have spent countless hours and other resources getting the DRI mach64 3D driver working, I figured that it would be most useful if shared, so that others with the same chipsets/cards could benefit from the drivers, if they so desire, before all of this old hardware ends up in the scrap heap. I will consider adding unreleased 3D drivers for other cards if requested and if possible.

If you have an older supported SIS or ATI mach64-class chipset/card, I have made the various softwares available for download. Currently F11 and x86 only (no PAE) (F11 SRPMs are available for rebuild on other architectures, if desired, and upon request). F12 cannot be supported at this time. The ATI mach64 drivers/kernel modules are fairly well tested and work well. The SIS drivers/kernel modules remain untested (2008-07-03: SIS support discontinued due to lack of interest).

In order to keep support in one location and to avoid redundancy, please refer to the following link for all additional info, including where to get all the various files, and instructions on their use: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=185162

In response to the inevitable question: "Is my card supported?", my answer is: "I have no idea. Check the list."

Questions/comments/feedback always welcome and appreciated. Enjoy.

Regards,
V
