did something change after kernel 2.6.8-1.521? re:Nvidia drivers and FC2

Hello all, back around kernel 2.6.5 I installed the Nvidia driver. Worked great... Then I upgraded the kernel, so had to reinstall the driver... just did the whole init 3, sh NVIDIA... thing, and smooth sailing... kept working great... until I upgraded from 2.6.8-1.521 to 2.6.9-1.6FC2.. the NVIDIA installer was failing and complaining, and continues to fail and complain to this day (with the 2.6.10 kernel) when I try to run the install.. the error message I get is:

Quote:
nvidia: Unknown symbol __VMALLOC_RESERVE
nvidia: Unknown symbol pci_find_class

ERROR: Unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.ko'. This is most likely
because the kernel module was built using the wrong kernel source files.
Please make sure you have installed the kernel source files for your
kernel; on Red Hat Linux systems, for example, be sure you have the
'kernel-source' rpm installed. If you know the correct kernel source
files are installed, you may specify the kernel source path with the
'--kernel-source-path' commandline option.
I made sure the kernel source package was installed each time, and even tried the --kernel-source-path thing without success.

I did a search on this forum, and noticed people advocating downloading some rpms from http://rebus.webz.cz/ ...does the NVIDIA installer no longer work with current Fedora kernels? Or am I once again in that peculiar Linux hell of "Dunno.. worked fine for me!" Maybe I'm just doing something stupid..

thanks all for any help..

Everytime you change the kernel you have to reinstall the Nvidia drivers. You upgraded the second time from 2.6.8 to 2.6.9 which requires it.

Did this error show up because you didn't reinstall the driver, or because the installer of the driver is giving this error message, not allowing you to install it?

I have this problem too, using the 6111 version of the nvidia drivers on a debian system.
They install in 2.6.7, but in 2.6.10 the same error occurs.

I downloaded the newest nvidia drivers (6129), and they cleanly installed under both kernels
BUT when starting X, the system locks up (last log output in /var/log/XF86.0.log is
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.o)

I think this is a problem in the nvidia driver, seems as if that kernel sysmbol has moved somewhere,
as it IS compiled into my kernel (did a grep on the used sources)

hope, nividia will fix this soon...

[EDIT]
see this thread in the nvidia forum, on how to fix your 6111 drivers or maybe get the new ones to work...

You rock doc.nice! I checked the nvidia site just a little while ago and didn't see that...

Thanks much..

Assume it worked for me if I don't come back to this thread.. (the previous sentence is for the sake of future forum searchers who might stumble across this.)
