Data recovery after upgrade

Hi everybody,

I am a relatively newbie to linux: I recently got a hand-me-down machine with RH9 and was using it for a while. Then I upgraded to Fedora Core 3, and that installation worked fine, but I seem to have lost all my data !! (I chose upgrade option NOT the reinstall option from the setup process). Also, I notice that during boot, the screen shows messages which point to folders called "/1" and "/boot1" instead of "/" or "/boot". I believe that this is where my NEW data is stored, but how do I recover or access my old root and boot partitions?

any help is appreciated !!!

thanks
pushpak

Your own data is actually stored in /home/<username>/. There won't be any data in /root/ unless you have saved files there (which isn't really recommended). The /boot/ directory holds the kernel and other files used for booting the system.

So probably the best thing to do is to copy your home directory, and then do a fresh install. The upgrade process is OK for moving to the next version up, but going straight from RH9 to FC3 is too big a jump - too many parts of the system have changed.
