I'm interested in creating a personal graphical greeter to be displayed when I log into my computer, however I haven't the slightest clue where to start. I know there are some at art.gnome.org but I kinda want to try making one or many myslef. I was basically wondering if someone could either give me some basic instructions on where to start or recommend a good website that has some instructions on it. This isn't a pressing matter only something I would enjoying trying out. Thanks.
I successfuly modified a theme i downloaded from art.gnome.org
i dont know of any tutorials but learned a little bit just by looking through the files and changing what i wanted. (and with a little trial and error)
the themes go in their own folders in /usr/share/gdm/themes and each theme has a number of icons/png's and the background image. There is also an XML file which i simply used gedit to play around with, it defines what files to use and the postion etc of text and everything.

Good luck
hello there. am trying to do what you've wrote. i've copy the jpeg file which am trying to use as background and am also have changed the file name, inside the xml reffer to the background. but still, it not work. could you please tell me which line are changed?
Its been 3 years since I've done this, but I think how I did it is this:
- Copied a preexisting theme to another folder.
- Copied the image I wanted to use as the background into that new folder and renamed the folder
- Edited the XML file and changed all occurences (I believe it's just one) of the old back ground, in my case it was windmill-screenshot.jpg to my new image:
Be sure to change your login theme from the previous one to the new one. They way I did it I believe the new theme still has the name of the old one, if you want to change this it will be somewhere in the XML file. Hope it helps.

hi there, thanx for the answer. indeed, one still confuse me is that the name of the theme can't change and i seemed unable to find inside the XML file, any line that represent the file name. anyhow, i able to make some GDM now, though through copy and paste . thanx a bunch .
