Correct IO conflicts?

HI all, I"m having aquite a time figuring out how to "setserial" or similar my serial card modem so that it doesn't crash my system. Now I'm fairly certain that I have some kind of conflict, but I would like someone to walk me through a process of uncovering which devices are in conflict (obviously the modem is with somehting else) and how to correct them. I really appreciate all the help you can give. I'm very frustrated, but love the Linux and never will go back! Just help if you think you can....Peace.
