Convert to fedora 6 from debian 3.1

Hi,

Im newbie here. Let me make my question straight. Currently, Im running Debian 3.1 web server. My question is how can I convert this OS to fedora core 6 remotely. The web server is a dedicated server, so I dont have the access to it locally. 2ndly, is't possible to convert using such method?

Thanks in advance

Debian and Fedora Core use different package management (dpkg packages managed by aptitude vs. rpm packages managed by yum), so I'm not sure how you could do remotely from within the operating system. Debian 3.1 is also more than a generation behind Fedora Core 6, so that the Apache, MySQL etc. configuration files won't be quite the same.

Probably your best option is to install a copy of Debian on a local machine such as a VMware Server, copy relevant files from Fedora to the Debian copy and work out a Debian configuration. When you have a good Debian configuration, arrange for a reinstallation of the remote system and copy the files back.

You'll probably find that the number of services and configuration files that you care is quite small, so this is less work than it sounds.

Hi Hob,

Thx for the explanation. Since the remote method doesnt work, I requested the web hosting to re-install it locally.
