Question Confused about updating Fedora Core 2 Test 1

I have installed Fedora Core 2 Test 1 from ISOs but I am confused about the best way to apply updates. I am interested in making a reasonably stable cutting edge system, so do not require the latest untested updates - just the more important ones. (Any ideas why the panel seems to stop responding? Also Evolution a little shaky.)

It seems from other posts that yum is preferable to RHN, but I cannot determine what my settings should be. I am using the default /etc/yum.conf as installed but it seems to download *many* packages and keeps failing...

Any help appreciated.

yum and the up2date (which i am pretty shure usses yum as a core in some way) is so increadibly slow and often stops responding compleatly. i think its a problem with the download mirrors it usses, if it was core 1, people have made a list of none offical mirrors you could replace it with, and it ran just about flawless, but im not shure if there are any alternet mirrors for core 2, till i find out im gopnna kinda shy away from updating, it always needs to crash out if it appears to freeze.

Thanks Krause. The panel in FC2test1 appears to stop responding then go blank something like 30mins after boot, but a terminal and applications can still be started from launchers on the desktop so it's not a complete loss.

What I am looking for is a (1) stable distro that I can (2) use my SATA hard drive with.

+ mdk91 accesses the SATA at floppy speed
+ mdk92 is very buggy even with all updates applied
(mdk have now changed their QA procedures so I may try 10 when released)
+ gentoo cost me about five days and never booted
+ FC2test1 is the current project (but still confused about updating)

So can FC2test1 meet my spec! Alternatively, can FC1 do it? (Stable, but SATA OK?)
