Compiling a new Kernel?

I need to compile a new kernel to enable my wireless card. Ive got fedora core 3 installed right now. Are there any disadvantages or advantages to compiling a new kernel from source from kernel.org, or should I get a kernel RPM?

disadvantage: you'll have to learn more about what goes into kernels, and that'll take time

advantage: you'll have (probably) a streamlined kernel built just for your system, and understand more about what's going on.

It doesn't take much real learning about the kernel because there are many many MANY howto's and walkthru's to make the process very painless. The only disadvantage really is the fact that you MIGHT have to rebuild it a few times as you keep screwing things up...learning each time ofcourse which is always good.

Most any well built kernel is going to be better off that what Fedora comes with as they try to make everyone happy so it has tons of stuff that you might not need thus making a bigger slower kernel.

I already know how to build a kernel from source, Ive done it on slackware at least a few dozen times successfully. Im just not used to compiling in fedora core, because by default there isnt any kernel source in the /usr/src directory.

Yeah...there are also lots of places around the www that have custom kernels with some "special" packages for this and that.

No difference where the files are located. Essentially all kernels use some variation of the standard kernel makefile. Get the source and compile as you normally would.

My quick notes to install the source for FC3.
